"Get the Scan!" call 212.355.7017

In a private conference hosted by the Male Breast Cancer Coalition, our NYCRANEWS editorial team met Dr. Jose Pablo Leone, medical oncologist and researcher at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Discussions covered tamoxifen and aromatase inhibitors for the treatment of male breast cancer, and his research plans in this field. Currently, Tamoxifen remains the only standard of care that is available for men with breast cancer. Dr. Leone started his review on Tamoxifen vs AI in 2014 in the University of Iowa at the VA hospital where he encountered with many cases of men who had breast cancer undergoing treatment. His interest widely expanded due to the lack of data on how to successfully manage and treat male breast cancer. (see complete article)

The nature of cancer cells and what makes cancer such a threat to us all is its ability to spread, hide, mutate and RETURN WITH A VENGEANCE. More and more doctors and survivors agree that being "cancer free" does not necessarily mean we are truly ever out of the woods. Some even rename this as "Free FOR NOW".

To be safe, it is suggested to look upon the first bout with cancer as a signal to be VIGILANT ABOUT CANCER RE-OCCURRING, whereby CANCER RECURRENCE has a tendency to happen with a vengeance. Where deadly METASTASIS is the ultimate enemy of it all, global cancer awareness needs an upgrade in its message. The NY Cancer Resource Alliance offers a proactive strategy dedicated to "Getting Checked Now!" and KEEPING IT AWAY with prevention programs and life-saving resources. "Fight Recurrence" was originally launched within the firefighter community in NYC (9/11 responders) and has proven effective to battle re-occurrence and potential metastasis. see: www.healthscannyc.org

Oct. 30, 2020- CH11 Morning News contacted the Male Breast Cancer Coalition and Dr. Robert Bard's Cancer Imaging office (aka the first Male-Friendly Breast Cancer Diagnostic Center) for an in-depth interview about the rising cases of breast cancer in men. included is 2x survivor, Marc Futterweit (MBCC ambassador and public speaker) who discussed his experience with the disease. This special feature is part of "Breast Cancer Awareness Month" where both speakers expressed the message that breast cancer is not a gender specific diseasse- as numbers in men continue to rise. Special thanks to Nicole O'Neal, CH11 Segment Producer & Cheri Ambrose (MBCC) for making this feature segment possible.

Launching our new video series
There is a constant debate in the cancer survivor community abouut the term "CANCER FREE". Historically, cancer has proven to be quite "sneaky" in its behavior during treatment and post-treatment prevention. For most survivors and doctors alike, recurrence is a major concern because living with that level of FEAR itself can be quite debilitating. Meanwhile, records of mortality rates from recurrence victims show a significant spike in effect, whereby "cancer often comes back with a vengeance". http://fightrecurrence.com/

Celebrity Survivor Makes Awareness his Life's Mission
Oct. 12, 2019- Recent data reflecting actual cases about male breast cancer has finally reached the tipping point in the visibility scale as more news coverage from advocacy groups and victims finally ‘going public’ have filled the media. Thanks to survivors like Mathew Knowles (music producer and father of Beyoncé) who elected to publicize his breast cancer significantly contributed to public awareness, identifying this issue as a serious threat to public health. Image Guided Treatment Solutions of Male Breast Cancer

There are innate differences in the way Breast Cancer is diagnosed, screened and managed between the sexes. For men, Mammograms are not usually the device of choice unless the patient is BRCA Positive, has Klinefelter's syndrome of has contralateral breast cancrinoma. Neither is MRI commonly used for average monitoring.

In this video, Dr. Bard presents a comprehensive view of image guided treatment solutions for Male Breast Cancer and the many ways that males' subdermal anomalies appear under imaging technology. This video is produced for the Male Breast Cancer Coalition in collaboration with Dr.Victoria L. Mango, Asst. Radiologist & Co-Director of Breast Imaging Education and Training at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.

According to the Male Breast Cancer Coalition, government health reports show an estimated 2550 new cases in US with a mortality rate between 280-480. This indicates that over the past 10 years, new cases are up by 22% and mortality rate is up by about 19% from previous years. Advocates collectively attribute much of these numbers due to the lack of public information, misdiagnoses and the emotional resistance in men about a commonly "female" disease. "Our Mission is to educate people all around the world to the risk of breast cancer in men, ultimately giving men the same fighting chance that their female counterparts have... just like Lung Cancer, Brain Cancer and Liver Cancer-- it knows no gender, age or race." says MBCC co-director Cheri Ambrose. "We hope to have breast checks included in all annual physicals for men one day- combined with updated intake forms asking for cancer in families will go along way in helping to change the way breast cancer is viewed."

Finally, the first MALE-FRIENDLY Breast Cancer Program FOR MEN-

According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, a man’s breast cells and tissue can still develop cancer even though males do not develop milk-producing breasts. One in a thousand men will be diagnosed with breast cancer- but the threat is expected to grow more prevalent each year. A common belief stated by survivors is that the male breast cancer count is largely swayed by the emotional STIGMA manifested by men about getting tested or screened for a once widely recognized female concern. Also, breast imaging centers are most commonly populated with women- making the male patient uncomfortable (and even afraid) to enter. As male breast cancer cases continue to be proven “rare”, the numbers are now beginning to rise as more and more patients are getting check-ups and the medical community is recognizing the urgency for advanced research and support.

Meet BARD CANCER DIAGNOSTICS, the first truly comprehensive imaging facility of its kind in the NYC area. Especially in the case of MALE BREAST CANCER, our staff and directors are most compassionate to all types of cancers and stages of malignancy. Our practice is dedicated to a non-invasive and immediate response approach to cancer screening. His expertise spans decades of advanced technical innovations with the unmatched ability to seek out and analyze tumors, cysts and all hints of possible cancer.

NYC, October 15, 2018- Dr. Robert Bard, medical director of Bard Cancer Diagnostics in collaboration
with the Male Breast Cancer Coalition launches the first official male-dedicated imaging and analysis
program of its kind to support the growing male breast cancer cases in the northeast. After a recent news report about 15 male breast cancer cases from 9/11 first responders in Sept, 2018, this program was formed as part of a joint task force for public awareness and a dedicated male-breast screening program to help address this gender-specific health threat. "When I first started doing breast imaging, we would see one or two male breast cancer cases per year- but now, I'm seeing more and more men developing benign and malignant breast tumors- mostly with firefighters," states Dr. Bard. (see complete press release)

Three Staging Options for Advanced Digital Breast Imaging
Advanced sonogram technology provides accurate use of sound waves to produce real-time images of the inside of the body. It is used as a complement to find anomalies and help diagnose the causes of pain, swelling and infection in the body’s internal organs while allowing the diagnostician the ability to zoom and ‘travel’ deep into the body for maximum exploration. Digital Imaging technology is also used to help guide biopsies and in many cases, even replicate much of the same reports of a clinical invasive biopsy. Imaging solutions such as high-powered Sonograms, Spectral Doppler, sonofluoroscopy, 3D/4D Image Reconstruction and the Spectral Doppler are safe, noninvasive, and does not use ionizing radiation. They also have the ability to provide early detection scans. ** Three STAGING OPTIONS are available depending on the patient’s current needs- to be discussed with practitioner prior to or during examination.

Based on a very true story
“After years of procrastinating, my husband Ted finally managed to book a trip to the dermatologist to remove a few annoying skin tags and a tiny mole from his left shoulder. On a routine trip to my radiologist, a simple handheld scanner concluded that Ted's mole was a MALIGNANT MELANOMA - a potentially deadly tumor. Ted discussed what would have been our next appointment and it was then that we realized that if the dermatologist would have applied the freezing solution to this mole under ‘standard procedure’ unaware of what we discovered, the melanoma would have metastasized and fast-tracked to every organ in the body.. . See Feature article

Scan Option 1
Scan Option 2
Scan Option 3
Typically performed for patients either self-identifying anomalies (bumps) for the first time and/or are seeking a second opinion + may have a family history of breast cancer (or other related cancers related to the breast)
This option scans the breast and the shoulder through which vessels and nerves enter and leave the upper arm; a person's armpit. This option is recommended for anyone who may be currently undergoing cancer treatment... also anyone who has recently (prior to 5 years) undergone a mastectomy since it detects unsuspected metastatic disease

For a patient who is at high risk for developing a cancer or requires advanced confirmation of a current tumor treatment protocol since the 3D/4D computer analysis verifies the success of the therapy in a quantitative analysis by the unique Doppler histogram technology

Technology applied:

SONOGRAM: Seek subdermal masses, breast lumps, tumor growths, fluid-filled cysts, nodes or hematoma. Sonography can be performed in multiple scan planes with real time 3-D image analysis with power and spectral Doppler flows.
SONOFLUOROSCOPY: of intra/subdermal soft tissues is to be performed in multiple scan planes with varying transducer frequencies.
3D/4D IMAGE RECONSTRUCTION: For any lesions that are homogeneous echogenic and well marginated on 3D and 4D computer histogram analysis.
SPECTRAL DOPPLER: Search for hyperemia of any lesions. Power Doppler will show normal flows in the adjacent arteries/veins. Spectral flows will show normal tri-phasic waveforms. Search for any peripheral lesion abnormalities or focal vascularity.

Recurrence Prevention & Regular Monitoring program

“I contracted Male Breast Cancer TWICE in one lifetime when I thought it was gone the first time! This taught me the kind of surprises cancer can give us all. Stay smart, be proactive and follow a RECURRENCE PREVENTION plan to KEEP CANCER AWAY.”
MARC FUTTERWEIT, Survivor/Senior Ambassador

Doctors will never guarantee that your cancer is gone forever. Cancer cells have been known to survive after your treatment and can grow over time. OUTSMART CANCER TODAY by learning how cancer recurrence works. Manage a healthy (and organic) lifestyle, support a regular fitness & exercise regimen and schedule an annual monitoring program with an advanced imaging specialist like Bard Cancer Diagnostics to maintain safety screening protocols to fight cancer recurrence.

The American Medical and Cancer Communities suggest that all survivors of cancer should subscribe to proper health and nutritional standards to support continued prevention. Rates of cancer recurrence are highest before REMISSION where the same factors that initially raises the risk of cancer might also provoke cancer recurrence after treatment.

Not-so Fun Facts: Did you know...
• More men die from breast cancer than from testicular cancer. Of the 9355 men diagnosed with breast cancer in the United States from 2004 to 2008, there were 1934 deaths, compared with 1758 deaths from 39 641 cases of testicular cancer.

• Men with breast cancer experience symptoms for an average of 6 months before the diagnosis is made.
Breast cancer in men presents at more advanced stages than in women, with 38% of men having axillary nodal involvement compared with 29% of women.5 The stage- and age-adjusted 5-year survival rates for men and women are similar, but comorbidities in older men lead to worse prognosis.

Identifying and checking for Breast cancers (male and female) start with checking yourself for lumps or unusual anomales under or on the skin. Tumors and cysts in men appear much closer to the surface, so finding a bump won't be too difficult.

Aside from sensory checking, there are also visual clues that may indicate symptoms such as discoloration, wrinkling or scaling both on the nipple or surrounding areas.

Bard Cancer Diagnostics carries the latest technologies to catch and identify all cancerous tumors from all stages of malignancy. For MEN, specific directives are in place to capture what most imaging facilities may miss due to programs typically designed for women.

The current standard in cancer screening for ALL breast cancer patients (both male and female) is MAMMOGRAPHY. However, this imaging tool misses some types of breast tumors. Published data suggests that incorporating SONOGRAPHY in the screening/scanning regimen can play an important role in detecting tumors that mammography may miss. In fact, over 94% of cancers seen only on ultrasound were invasive tumors with average size of 10 mm, and in the studies where staging was detailed, 91% were node negative, meaning it had not spread and complete cure was possible due to early detection.

POWER DOPPLER SONOGRAPHY adds increased accuracy to male breast imaging evaluation over ordinary ultrasound because it shows higher blood flow speeds, often a sign of cancerous activity in the breast. Studies have shown that suspicious blood flow identified by pre-surgery Power Doppler scans corresponds very well with the size, location and aggression of actual tumors that are then surgically removed. Thus, Power Doppler brings an important clinical dimension to male breast cancer detection. 3D sonography clearly shows tumor margins and 3D Doppler affords an index of cancer aggression and metastatic potential.

Sonograms and Ultrasound offers the following advantages for MALE BREAST CANCER SCREENING:
• Highest accuracy in all breast textures
• Non-invasive-no radiation exposure
• Cost effective
• Can distinguish cysts (fluid-filled masses) from cancerous tumors without needle sampling
• Ease of image guidance for breast biopsy

Patients who should consider ultrasound scanning of the breast include those at risk of breast cancer because of personal or family history and the presence of fibrocystic (dense) breast tissue which increases cancer risk by 400%.

MPR-TV reports on Advanced Cancer Doppler Imaging. Meet Dr. Robert L. Bard (award-winning cancer diagnostician and expert imaging specialist) and see him break down the difference between a benign tumor and a fully-blown cancerous cell- and how using his advanced 3D and 4D Doppler technology makes all the time-saving difference in getting an accurate study.

Many routine imaging procedures can assure people that they are at risk for a disease or catastrophic medical event: heart scans, virtual colonoscopies, and lung screening are a few examples of ways to encourage healthy choices (nutrition, supplements, exercise, stress management, etc.) by reinforcing them. BARD CANCER DIAGNOSTICS is founded on the commitment to explore and implement the latest diagnostic technologies as a means of building the proper treatment strategy of many types of cancers. We also specialize in PREVENTION solutions for our patients who strive to maintain a health-conscious lifestyle as well as those who are at increased risk of certain diseases (hereditary factors or environmental exposure to toxic substances) by confirming that their efforts to prevent disease are working.

Using state-of-the-art equipment, Dr. Bard’s practice offers unique forms of sonography to evaluate blood flow related to tumor activity and to identify areas of suspicion. More tumor vessels signifies more aggressive disease. 3D & 4D analyses are non-invasive and rapid with results available to the patient during the visit. Patients in need of reassurance and world class imaging come from all countries for cancers of the prostate, breast, skin, thyroid and melanoma.

Tech Innovations: New Cancer Detection from a

A new alternative to imaging diagnostic technologies for scanning and searching for cancer tumors is through a new form of blood test called IvyGene. Since early 2018, it has been confirmed to identify the presence of cancer as early as stage 1 by providing measurable data in the form of a score to make it easier to understand- while confirming the presence of cancer early, when it can be more easily managed and treated. "...our mission is to make cancer testing available and affordable for everyone. We work closely with thousands of physicians nationwide to provide early cancer confirmation and save lives sooner. Unlike many genetic tests that use DNA to determine the propensity or possibility of developing cancer over time, the IvyGene test confirms actual disease presence at the time of testing. Recently, a new form of blood test by LAM (Laboratory for Advanced Medicine) can confirm the presence of cancer as early as stage 1. It provides measurable data in the form of a score to make it easier to understand- while confirming the presence of cancer early, when it can be more easily managed and treated.   The score can be used as a baseline to measure treatment effectiveness." Cancer Crusader- American Surgeon Pioneers Advantages of Robotic Mastectomy:

Meet Dr. Stephen Chagares (Tinton Falls, NJ), a visionary in laparoscopic and robotic breast surgery who recently brought the discipline of Dr. Antonio Toesca at The European Institute of Oncology in Milan Italy to our shores. On Sept. 14, 2018, he successfully achieved being the first in the United States to perform robotic nipple sparing mastectomy on a female cancer patient to be followed by immediate reconstruction. This presented major advantages over conventional procedures including a significant reduction in procedural time (from 7 to 3 hours), a remarkable recovery in range of motion and according to published 5 year data, ZERO cancer recurrence and equal oncologic outcomes.Recent news features Dr. Chagares is also the first worldwide to successfully perform this procedure on a male patient worldwide. Brian Thompson, 34 (L-image insert), recently underwent bilateral mastectomy with robotic assistance for growing and painful tumors from a disorder called Pseudoangiomatous Stromal Hyperplasia (PASH). Dr. Chagares removed all of the male patient's breast tissue from both breasts through single incisions under the armpits, eliminating incisions and scarring on the breasts.

According to the World Health Organization, early detection of cancer greatly increases the chances for successful treatment. In the ongoing battle against cancer, it is common knowledge that most cancers in their early stages are far more likely to be treated with positive results. Moreover, a thorough checkup of one's physiological analyses, heredity review and personal data gathering (from blood & dna tests) are all strong info-gatherings for early warning signs that someone may be a candidate for cancer. PROACTIVE tasking starts from AWARENESS, EDUCATION & REGULAR SCREENINGS. The right attitude of self-preservation and an appreciation for longevity is lesson #1. Pursuing a balanced lifestyle covering all the bases of nutrition, exercise, sleep, detoxing and de-stressing is also part of an overall plan for better quality of life.
